How to practice your Face Expression for Public Speaking

Some people’s faces are stiff and inexpressive through lack of practice in registering emotion. These exercises will relieve that stiffness.

1. Practice feeling and showing emotion off the platform, in everyday life. Begin by making yourself smile at least five times a day (when the occasion is appropriate, of course.)

2. When smiling feels easy and natural, go on to other expressions-surprise, sadness, puzzlement, doubt, suspicion, and so on. I repeat: there is no need consciously to shape and rehearse an expression. Simply make yourself feel, and let your face do what comes naturally.

3. Limber up your facial muscles by several daily sessions of wide yawning, followed by pulling funny faces. (This is best done in private.)

4. Immediately before going on to the platform to speak, do the relaxation of exercises. They relieve tension in the muscles of face and neck, help the face to be more expressive and, as a bonus, help to improve the tone and resonance of your voice.
